BJP To Issue Notices To Over 20 MPs Absent During Voting On 'One Nation, One Election' Bill

BJP will seek an explanation from over 20 MPs as they did not attend the session despite the party's whip.

The Bharatiya Janata Party will be sending notices to the MPs who remained absent during the voting on the 'One Nation, One Election' bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The BJP will seek an explanation from over 20 leaders regarding their absence since they did not attend the session despite the party's whip.

The BJP had issued a three-line whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs regarding their presence on December 17 as the government was slated to introduce the bill on simultaneous elections.

The 'One Nation, One Election' Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha after 269 MPs voted in its favour. 198 MPs of the Congress, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party of the opposition bloc voted against it.

Two rounds of voting were held in the Lok Sabha using electronic machines. In the first round 220 votes were in favour and 149 were against the motion.

However, after protests by the Opposition following the first round of voting, Speaker Om Birla conducted another round of voting through paper slips for those who felt their responses should be recorded again.

The agenda for today also included other important bills including the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill and a bill to further amend the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991.

Introducing the bill,  Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal asserted that the legislation wouldn't tamper with the powers enjoyed by the states and said the proposed bills do not attack the basic structure doctrine, while the opposition continued to term the move "dictatorial".
