BJP Demands Bhabanipur Bypoll Suspension After Dilip Ghosh 'Heckled' During Campaign

BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh, who was allegedly manhandled by the TMC supporters on the last day of campaigning in Bhabanipur, said the “Election Commission is aware of everything”.

Kolkata: Launching a frontal attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for creating ruckus during campaigning in Bhabanipur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded suspension of the upcoming by-poll stating there is no point to hold the polls if one can’t reach out to the voters.

BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh, who was allegedly manhandled by the TMC supporters on the last day of campaigning in Bhabanipur, said the “Election Commission is aware of everything”.

“We have complained to them several times in Delhi in Kolkata. Despite this, no security arrangement was made. There is no point to hold the polls if we can’t reach out to the voters. The people are living in constant fear,” he added.

Ghosh said the TMC workers hurled abuses at him while he was campaigning in Bhabanipur for BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal.

“I was meeting some people at a vaccination centre when some people suddenly surrounded me and started jostling. One of our workers was badly beaten,” he added, ANI reported.

The BJP national vice-president said that he was also attacked but the local police did not help.

“My security tried to stop it and they brought out their guns to scare the attackers. Arjun Singh was also surrounded and he was forced to leave the area amid ‘go back’ slogans,” he added.

Tibrewal will lock horns with West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur by-poll to be held on September 30.

The counting of votes will take place on October 3.
