Assam NRC row: TMC leader Mahua Moitra 'assaults' lady constable at Silchar airport

SILCHAR: Amid high drama, a delegation sent by the Trinamool Congress to assess the situation in Assam post-NRC was stopped at the airport in Silchar on Thursday and the members taken under preventive detention later. The authorities had already explained to the TMC team on Wednesday that prohibitory orders were in force and that it should not visit Silchar and disturb peace, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia said. "But the team members did not respond cordially and engaged in a scuffle with the security forces and other government staff. Two Assam police women constables and a civil staff were injured," he said. Meanwhile, a video was shared by the news agency ANI purportedly showing TMC MLA Mahua Moitra clashing with a lady constable who tried to restrain her after the TMC delegation was stopped at the airport. The lady cop reportedly received injuries on her hand. Banerjee had earlier alleged that the members of the TMC delegation, including women, were "manhandled" at the airport. Asked if legal action would be taken against the TMC leaders for getting into a scuffle with the security personnel, the DGP said, "Two cases can be filed -- one for violation of section 144, CrPC and another for injuring the police personnel." He added that those injured in the scuffle were provided medical treatment. (With additional inputs from PTI)
