Assam: 22 Students Suspended For 'Assaulting' Five-Month Pregnant Teacher

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya's principal claimed he was also heckled along with another teacher by a group of students of Class 10 and 11.

Twenty-two school students in Assam's Dibrugarh district have been suspended after they allegedly assaulted a five-month pregnant teacher. The teacher was allegedly manhandled by the students after she informed the parents of one of the pupils about his poor academic performance and conduct in the school, PTI reported.

Speaking to the news agency ANI, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya principal Rathees Kumar said, "Victim was rushed to the hospital & her condition is normal. That day, there was anarchy on the school premises, and students tried to attack me as well. Police were called. Authorities have suspended 22 students involved in the incident."

According to Rathees Kumar, the incident took place on Sunday evening after the history teacher informed the parents of a student about his poor academic performance during the Parents Teachers Council (PTC) meeting.

"After the meeting, some students formed a group and started harassing the teacher in front of the main academic block. A few of them pushed her and one student tried to pull her by her hair," he said, as reported by PTI.

She was saved by some other women teachers, school staffers and a few girl students from the attack, Kumar added.

According to the report, she was immediately rushed to a hospital as she was on the verge of collapsing since she already had some complications due to pregnancy.

Rathees Kumar also stated that he was heckled along with another teacher by a group of students of Class 10 and 11 of the school in Moran area.

"From our enquiry, we found that 22 students of classes 10 and 11 were involved in the incident and I called their parents the next morning after having an emergency meeting at my residence. Hearing the development, this time the students threatened me over the phone and started moving towards my quarters to attack me," Kumar further said.

A police official said no case was registered since a formal complaint was not filed. The principal said, "We have informed the office of the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner...The ADC concerned assured us of a magisterial probe and asked us to take stern action against the students."
