Amit Shah Challenges Rahul Gandhi To Show Provision In CAA That 'Takes Away' Citizenship

In his speech, Shah also said that it was Mahatma Gandhi's desire that after the partition of India and Pakistan, all non-Muslims who did not wish to live in Pakistan, should be allowed to come to India.

Shimla: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday challenged former Congress President Rahul Gandhi to come forward and explain any provision in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that says citizenship of a person will be taken away. Addressing a public rally in the Himachal Pradesh capital on the second anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Shah in his half-hour address defended the Citizenship Act. "I challenge Rahul 'baba' to show even one clause in the Act that has provision to take away citizenship of anyone," said Shah as ongoing anti-CAA protests continued in New Delhi. He said under this Act there was no provision to take away the citizenship of anyone, even belonging to a minority community. During his speech, Shah, however, did not mention about the all India National Register of Citizens (NRC). Further in his speech, Shah also assured the people of the country that no one will be stripped off their citizenship. Further accusing the Congress party and its allies of spreading rumours, Shah said, "The Congress and company are spreading rumours that the citizenship of the minorities will be taken away with the Citizenship Amendment Act." "This Act has a provision to give citizenship to the those belonging to the minority who came from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan," the BJP leader added. “You [the Congress] please do not mislead people. Don’t try to destroy the country’s peace. If you have the facts, then present them before the people,” he said. In his speech, Shah also said that it was Mahatma Gandhi's desire that after the partition of India and Pakistan, all non-Muslims who did not wish to live in Pakistan, should be allowed to come to India. But the then Prime Minister did not speak about it.] "Pakistan failed to implement the Nehru-Liaquat pact to protect religious and other rights of the minorities", Shah said, adding that it prompted the Narendra Modi-led BJP government to table the legislation in Parliament. "When Modiji became the Prime Minister for the first time, he granted special status to Himachal Pradesh with 90 per cent assistance in centrally-sponsored schemes," he added. Further in his speech, Shah said the Modi government in the Centre has approved One Rank, One Pension that gave relief to so many retired military personnel. Trying to build bonding, Shah, who donned a Himachali cap, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a special attachment with the state.
