Five Facts About Quit India Movement

The Quit India Movement is also known as India August Movement or Bharat Chodo Andolan was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) by Mahatma Gandhi.

NEW DELHI: India is celebrating the occasion of 76th anniversary of Quit India Movement today. Many dignitaries and politicians took on Twitter and remembered the great women and men who took part in the Quit India Movement. What Was Quit India Movement?

  1. On this day in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave the clarion call of Do or Die to all Indians to drive away Britishers from the country.
  2. The Quit India Movement is also known as the India August Movement, during World War II, demanding an end to British Rule from India.
  3. The movement had begun from Gawalia Tank Maidan which is also known as August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.
  4. Many national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were arrested.
  5. Disorderly and non-violent demonstrations took place throughout the country in the following days.
In 1992 Reserve Bank of India issued a 1 rupee commemorative coin to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Quit India Movement.
