India Protests Pakistan’s Attempt To Convert Lahore Gurudwara Into A Mosque

New Delhi: After reports surfaced of Pakistan trying to convert a famous gurudwara at Naulakha Bazaar in Lahore into a mosque, India on Monday expressed anguish over the issue. India on Monday has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan High Commission over the reports, as per the spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as per the news agency PTI report. In fact, India last week also asked Pakistan to take care of minorities and their cultural heritage after it came to light that a Buddha statue was destructed in Pakistan at the behest of a religious cleric. What is being claimed? As per the reported incident the Gurdwara Shahidi Asthan, site of martyrdom of Bhai Taru Singh ji at Naulakha Bazaar in Lahore, Pakistan is being claimed as the place of Masjid Shahid Ganj. It is being attempted to convert the gurudwara to a mosque. What is the significance of the Gurudwara? Gurdwara Shahidi Asthan Bhai Taru Ji is known for its historical significance where "Bhai Taru Ji made a supreme sacrifice in 1745. It is a place of reverence and considered sacred by Sikhs and the incident has been viewed with grave concern in India. In fact, the news has led to protests on social media with Twitteratis expressing their concerns over minorities in Pakistan. Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh also took to micro-blogging site to express anguish over the report.
