IMD Issues Severe Heat Alert in 11 States Including Delhi — Check If Your State Is On The List

IMD has issued a severe heat alert for 11 states, including Delhi, UP, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Temperatures may rise by 2–4°C this week, with heatwave conditions expected to persist till April 10.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heat alert for 11 states as temperatures across India continue to rise sharply. As per the latest weather bulletin, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in several regions, including Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and more. “The maximum temperature in North West India, Maharashtra and South Peninsular Plateau may increase by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during the next 4 days,” IMD said on Sunday night.

Heatwave Conditions in 11 States

A heatwave spell is expected to dominate large parts of India this week. The affected states include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and parts of the South Peninsular region.

“Heat wave may continue in some parts of Gujarat till 10 April,” IMD noted. “Severe heat wave conditions may prevail in parts of Saurashtra and Kutch till 7 April.” Rajasthan is expected to face both heatwave and severe heatwave situations from 7 to 10 April.

In Haryana and Chandigarh, heatwave conditions are likely till 10 April. Delhi is expected to experience high temperatures and dry winds from 7 to 8 April, while Punjab may face similar conditions from 7 to 10 April. Western Uttar Pradesh will be under heatwave watch from 7 to 9 April, and Madhya Pradesh from 8 to 10 April.

Himachal Pradesh may also see unusual heat till 7 April, marking an early start to summer-like conditions in typically cooler regions.

Temperatures to Spike Across India

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in Central India are expected to rise by 2 to 3°C during the next 4 days. In Gujarat, an increase of around 2°C is likely over two days. Daytime temperatures are expected to cross 40°C in many of the affected areas.

In addition to the rise in daytime temperatures, night temperatures are also expected to remain above normal, offering little respite from the heat.

Rain Likely in Select Areas

Despite the widespread heat, parts of southern and northeastern India may receive scattered rainfall. “There may be sporadic rain in Kerala, Mahe till April 7, Karnataka till April 8, East and Northeast India till April 10,” the IMD noted. Light to moderate rain is also expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on April 9 and 10. Bihar may experience a hailstorm on April 9.

Uttar Pradesh Braces for Extreme Summer

Uttar Pradesh, especially the Bundelkhand region, is expected to witness prolonged and intense heat. “The maximum temperature is expected to be higher than normal in the entire Uttar Pradesh,” said Atul Kumar Singh, an IMD official. “Night temperatures are also expected to remain abnormally high.”

Seven districts in Jhansi and Chitrakootdham divisions will be most affected, along with western UP areas near Rajasthan.
