'Historic Day': CJI Says SC To Come Under National Judicial Data Grid To Help Track Case Pendency

Chief Justice of India announces that the Supreme Court of India to come under the National Judicial Data Grid platform which provides tracking of pendency of cases. CJI says it will bring transparency and accountability.

“It is a historic day. It is a unique platform which is developed by the NIC and in house team of the Supreme Court. Now, at the click of a button, you can see real-time information on the pendency of cases, year-wise, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases, number of cases decided qoram-wise,” CJI DY Chandrachud said.

Displaying the site in the courtroom the CJI said, "At a glance, the webpage give us current year's pendency of civil and criminal cases, total pendency of registered and unregistered cases. And registered cases are those which are still defected and defects are not cured by the lawyers yet."

He also showed graphs related to the Supreme Court and said, as quoted by the Live Law, "You can see the number of cases in the previous months, number of cases instituted and disposed of in the current year, and coram wise pendency of cases- three judges, five judges, seven judges, and nine judges."

At present the portal shows data only up to the high court level. The CJI said that uploading of data on the NJDG will ensure transparency and accountability in the judicial domain, PTI reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on the announcement and said harnessing of technology will further transparency and enhance the justice delivery system in the country.

He posted on micro blogging site X, formerly known as Twitter, "Laudatory step by the Supreme Court and CJI DY Chandrachud Ji. Such harnessing of technology will further transparency and enhance the justice delivery system in our country."

The NJDG is a database of orders, judgments and case details of 18,735 district and subordinate courts and high courts created as an online platform under the eCourts Project. Data is updated on a near real-time basis by the connected district and taluka courts.

It provides data relating to judicial proceedings and decisions of all computerised district and subordinate courts of the country. All high courts have also joined the NJDG through web services, providing easy access facility to the litigant public.
