A new Covid variant discovered last year has quickly become the dominant strain in the United States, earning it a disturbing title in the process. Some have dubbed it the "kraken variant," and it has already been found in at least 28 other countries, according to the World Health Organization.
XBB.1.5 is a descendent of the omicron XBB subvariant, which is a hybrid of two previous strains: BA.2.75 and BA.2.10.1. Since the WHO first expressed concerns about the original XBB variant last October, it has already triggered waves of infection in countries such as Singapore and India.
According to Union health ministry data released on Thursday, India has recorded 188 new coronavirus infections, while active cases have decreased to 2,554. The total number of Covid cases is 4,46,79,319, and the death toll is 5,30,710, with three deaths reconciled by Kerala, according to data updated at 8 a.m.
The daily positivity rate is 0.10 percent, while the weekly positivity rate is 0.12%, according to the ministry. According to the health ministry's website, active cases account for 0.01 percent of total infections, while the national recovery rate has risen to 98.80 percent.
On Wednesday, four cases of Covid subvariant BF.7 infection were discovered in Bengal. All of the patients had arrived from the United States. A 21-year-old woman was also diagnosed with XBB. The 1.5 variant infection is to blame for the rise in cases in the United States.
Meanwhile, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has described the COVID limitations on China as a "knee-jerk" resumption of measures that have proven "ineffective" over the last three years.
On Tuesday, five cases of COVID-19's XBB.1.5 variant infection were found in India, according to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). Of the five, three cases were found in Gujarat and one each in Karnataka and Rajasthan, according to INSACOG figures on Tuesday. The XBB.1.5 strain is a relative of the Omicron XBB variant, which is a recombinant of the Omicron BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants. Combined, XBB and XBB.1.5 make up 44 per cent of cases in the US.
