China's President Xi Jinping acknowledged on Saturday that the current wave of COVID-19 sweeping the country has "entered a new phase" and that "tough challenges remain," as the World Health Organization (WHO) has asked Beijing to provide more data about the coronavirus variants as India and other countries ramp up screening measures for visitors from the Communist nation.

"We have now entered a new phase of COVID-19 response where tough problems remain," Xi said in his New Year address to the nation, adding that it has "not been an easy trip" as the country has to confront "unprecedented difficulties and challenges".

Genome sequencing of over 500 samples gathered in December is currently underway in INSACOG labs across the country, as part of a high-level Covid review meeting hosted by a key government official, according to news agency PTI on Saturday.

P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, presided over a meeting with senior officials and experts to evaluate the status of COVID-19 in the country and compliance with the PM's orders issued during the review meeting on December 22.

During the meeting, officials from the Union Health Ministry stated that the Ministry of Commerce had been requested to monitor the shipment of medicinal supplies and equipment to China.

The World Health Organization has once again encouraged China to disclose specific and real-time data on the COVID-19 situation in the nation, following an increase in coronavirus cases following Beijing's relaxation of its rigorous "zero-COVID" policy.

The World Health Organization has requested that Chinese health officials disclose data on genetic sequencing, hospitalisations, fatalities, and immunisations.

A high-level conference between WHO and Chinese officials on the current rise in COVID-19 cases was held on Friday to seek additional information on the situation and to offer WHO's expertise and additional help, according to a WHO statement.

India has joined the United States, Japan, Italy, and Taiwan in requiring COVID testing for Chinese travellers, amid a COVID-19 increase in China after officials eased tight "zero-COVID" standards.

China's official COVID-19 data have become unreliable as less testing is being done across the country following the recent relaxation of the "zero-COVID" guideline.

Beijing's decision to lift all travel restrictions, including the elimination of quarantine for arriving visitors beginning January 8 ahead of Chinese New Year, has sparked concern around the world.

During this time, millions of Chinese are scheduled to travel to various areas of the world for vacation.
