Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Sunday, May 23: Coronavirus vaccination centres run by Mumbai's civic body will be shut today, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Saturday adding that the details for Monday will be shared by them on Twitter on Sunday.

"Dear Mumbaikars. There will be no vaccination at any of the centres tomorrow. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday. The details for Monday will be shared tomorrow by this handle & the respective wards too," the civic body tweeted.

Black fungus cases or mucormycosis, which have been steadily growing across the country, can be prevented by stopping “irrational” use of steroids for Covid-19 treatment, the government said on Saturday.

Addressing the daily Covid-19 briefing, Niti Aayog (health) member VK Paul said, “The role of steroids in mucormycosis cannot be denied. Administration of steroids beforehand, administering steroids in high doses and giving steroids for a prolonged period is irrational.”

He added that the country needs to fight mucormycosis as the “disease has now taken the shape of an outbreak as it is affecting Covid-19 patients”.

States across the country on Saturday extended restrictions amid a surge in coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases. Tamil Nadu extended the lockdown enforced to check the spread of the pandemic. Chief minister MK Stalin announced that the ongoing lockdown, slated to end on May 24, will continue for another week in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh government also extended the partial corona curfew by a week till May 31.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration also extended the ‘corona curfew’ till May 31 in the wake of a surge in Covid cases.
