World Photography Day 2022: History, Significance And Theme This Year — All You Need To Know

Throughout history, photography has played an important role. Because all of these historical occasions were captured in images, we now know what individuals looked like 100 years ago.

Word Photography day is celebrated on August 19 every year to commemorate the release of Daguerreotype photography. The day is a special celebration of photography's past while also embracing modern technological advancements, and looking forward to a tremendous prospect in the future.

World Photography Day: History

World Photography Day is observed as it originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photography technique that was invented in 1837 by Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce.

It was recognized by the French Academy of Sciences on January 9, 1839, and the French government purchased the patent for the method, referring to it as "a gift to the world."

Daguerreotyping was not the only method utilized to create permanent photography. The first documented instance of a permanent photograph, known as "View from the Window at Le Gras," was made in 1826 by Niepce using a technique termed "heliography."

Apart from that, Robert Cornelius of the US took the first self-portrait in 1839 by setting up his camera, removing its lens cap, and running to the frame.

Not much later, the first permanent colour photograph was taken by Thomas Stutton in 1861. It was made using red, green, and blue filters to produce a series of monochrome images. The picture quality was believed to be unsatisfactory because emulsions used at the time were too insensitive to the spectrum.

This was followed by the first digital photograph, which was taken in 1957 by American engineer Russell Kirsch. He took a digital scan of a photograph of his kid taken at a resolution of 176x176. Twenty years after this ground-breaking invention, a Kodak engineer created the first digital camera.

Later, in order to encourage individuals to take images that have personal significance for them, professional photographer Korske Ara launched World Photo Day in 2010.

World Photography Day 2022: Significance

A photo is nothing more than a variety of feelings that are present at a specific moment in time and are exquisitely captured through the art of photography.

Throughout history, photography has played an important role. Because all of these historical occasions were captured in images, we now know what individuals looked like 100 years ago.

As said by Henrik Ibsen, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, photographers express a wide range of emotions, feelings, ideas and moments through pictures and memorialize them for future generations to see.

The theme for this year is "Pandemic Lockdown Through The Lens".

The day is incredibly important and has a specific place in contemporary culture. It is very important to encourage young professionals and students to pursue a career in this field.
