World Ayurveda Day 2023: Herbs That Men Can Include In Their Daily Regime To Reap Benefits

While conventional fitness regimes focus on vigorous workouts and strict diet plans, Ayurveda offers a more holistic and sustainable approach to men's fitness.

In today's fast-paced world, fitness is not just a goal, it's a necessary component of a healthy lifestyle. While conventional fitness regimes focus on vigorous workouts and strict diet plans, Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine from India, offers a more holistic and sustainable approach to men's fitness. Ayurveda’s time-tested principles can not only enhance physical fitness but also promote mental and emotional well-being.

Role Ayurveda Plays To Enhance Men's Health

Dr. Manoj Kutteri, who is the Medical Director and CEO, at Atmantan Wellness Centre said, "Ayurveda provides a holistic approach to men's health, addressing mental, emotional, and physical elements in order to achieve balance and well-being. In order to enhance general well-being, this holistic approach to health and wellness places a strong emphasis on balancing the mind, body, and spirit. To help the body release toxins and regain equilibrium, Ayurveda uses purifying procedures called panchakarma. Men can gain from these habits by having better general health and well-being."

"Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the three doshas that Ayurveda uses to classify people according to their distinct constitutions. Men may have varying dosha predominance; knowing one's dosha can assist in making informed dietary and lifestyle choices. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of nutrition in preserving health. A diet that fits their dosha and takes care of their unique health issues can be beneficial for men. For instance, a male with a Vata dominant may benefit from warm, filling dishes, whereas a man with a Pitta dominant may want chilly, soothing foods. Ayurveda generally advises against eating processed or highly processed foods and in favour of eating fresh, natural foods. Include a range of healthy grains, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables in your diet," he added.

Ingredients That Can Enhance Men's Fitness:

Talking about the ingredients that can enhance men's fitness, Dr. Kriti Soni, who is the Head of R&D, at Kapiva recommended the following:

  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - Known to help increase muscle mass, reduce cortisol levels, and improve strength.
  • Shilajit - A sticky substance found primarily in the rocks of the Himalayas, it's thought to promote vitality and stamina.
  • Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) - Often used for bodybuilding, it's believed to improve libido and overall physical performance.
  • Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) - Traditionally used to enhance sexual performance and increase energy levels.
  • Mucuna Pruriens - Contains L-Dopa, which can influence dopamine levels, supporting growth hormone functions and muscle development.
  • Bala (Sida cordifolia) - Often recommended for increasing strength and stamina, and reducing fat.
  • Amalaki (Emblica officinalis or Indian gooseberry) - A potent antioxidant that supports the immune system and promotes general health.
  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) - Known to improve cognitive functions and potentially aid in stress reduction.
  • Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) - Enhances dopamine levels, potentially influencing mood and sexual function.
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil) - An adaptogen that helps the body adapt to stress and may provide increased endurance.
  • Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) - Although not traditionally Indian, it's now embraced in Ayurvedic medicine for its strong adaptogenic properties.
  • Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) - Believed to support cardiovascular health and endurance.
  • Pippali (Long pepper) - Used to enhance digestion and metabolism, which can be beneficial in maintaining optimal body weight.
  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa) - Contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory properties that can aid muscle recovery.
  • Vidari Kanda (Pueraria tuberosa) - Traditionally used to increase strength and bulk in body tissues.
  • Kaunch Beej (Mucuna pruriens seeds) - The seeds of Mucuna Pruriens, used for boosting muscle growth and reducing fat.

In addition to her, Swagatika Das, who is the founder of Nat Habit said, "In Ayurveda, men's fitness is approached holistically, combining yoga and exercises focusing on endurance rather than high intensity. Pranayama, which elongates breath cycles, calms the 'pran' (life force) and the mind ('mann'), ensuring long-term fitness. Ayurveda emphasises consuming anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and green vegetables. These choices enhance blood flow to muscles and organs, promoting vitality. Conversely, excessive consumption of red meat or sodium-laden foods can lead to inflammation and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity, causing fatigue. Additionally, avoiding 'tamasic' foods like fermented beverages, curd, alcohol, and “baasi khanna” helps maintain an active and energetic lifestyle, preventing lethargy and promoting mental well-being."
