What Is Imposter Syndrome? Know Symptoms And Ways To Overcome It
Imposter syndrome is not classified as a psychiatric condition, but it can coincide with anxiety and depression, potentially hindering one's professional achievements.
Have you come across a situation when you are about to hit the 'POST' button but started feeling very anxious at that moment? Several thoughts start going through your mind - Should I post it? Should I not? What will people think? Will they think I'm not good enough? You suddenly become too concerned about how people might react to what you post and might even hold back your opinion. This fear of being judged is called imposter syndrome, where people have doubts on their skills, talents or accomplishments.
Although imposter syndrome is not just connected to social media, yet in the present scenario, the internet is a place where we not only meet new people, but come across a whirlwind of talent that we tend to question our abilities. This constant comparison generates considerable amount of stress leading to anxiety and depression.
Explaining Imposter Syndrome in detail, Sumalatha Vasudeva, who is a Psychologist at Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Bengaluru said, "Imposter syndrome, a cognitive distortion, afflicts individuals with persistent doubts about their skills and achievements despite evidence suggesting otherwise. Those affected, question their competence, doubting both their abilities and others' perceptions of them. This phenomenon, experienced by many, including high-functioning individuals, leads to pervasive self-doubt, anxiety, and depression."
Symptoms Of Imposter Syndrome:
People who are highly neurotic—meaning easily upset or prone to anxiety—are more likely to experience imposter syndrome.
Talking about the symptoms, Sumalatha said, "They include self-doubt, isolation, undervaluing contributions, and crediting luck for success, while fearing failure and experiencing burnout. The consequences extend beyond personal turmoil to impact job performance and satisfaction."
How You Can Overcome Imposter Syndrome:
Overcoming imposter syndrome requires acknowledging and expressing self-doubt, reframing negative thoughts, focusing on achievements, and refraining from comparing oneself to others. When you are able to overcome this barrier, it can unlock new opportunities.
Nirajita Banerjee, LinkedIn Career Expert and India Senior Managing Editor said, "Every professional’s journey is unique and it's these diverse experiences that sets us apart. While overcoming Imposter Syndrome may seem daunting, there are simple steps you can take to boost your confidence:
- Lean on your 'why': Professionals who have been able to build a strong community through their content are the ones who have a clear purpose and have defined their niche. For example - if you are a successful entrepreneur, your ‘why’ could be to help others build their businesses or if you are a working professional, you could share tips on how to be better leaders or share useful career advice. Having a clear sense of clarity of purpose can help build confidence.
- Embrace authenticity: In most cases, the hardest part is overcoming inertia and making your first post. Begin with short updates on topics you’re most passionate about. You can even use generative AI to give you a solid foundation to start with and hone it by adding your lived human experience.
- Break it down and seek support: Divide content creation into manageable parts so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Build a rhythm and set deadlines on when you’ll ideate, create and refine your content. If needed, you can sound board it with someone in your network.
- Participate in an existing conversation: If you find determining what to post into that blank share box daunting, a good way to start is by jumping onto an existing conversation that you see on your feed and adding your own take on it. Everyone has a unique story to tell and you could share your perspective on the topic.
In addition, Sandeep Nair, Cofounder, David & Who shared, "The easiest way to beat Imposter Syndrome? Create content for yourself from two years ago. And remember that 90% of those who read it will be impressed by it. The remaining 10% were not going to be your followers anyway. Constant comparison is a joy-killer in your creative journey. Refocus on your own path, not others'. Your unique voice is what truly resonates with your audience."
What A Content Creator Has To Say About Imposter Syndrome:
Priyanka Gill, who is a Venture Partner at Kalaari Capital and Group Co-founderof Good Glamm Group, shared, "As creators, we often face common challenges that can stir feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. The fear of not being good enough or feeling like a fraud can be paralyzing, especially in an industry where comparison is prevalent and success seems elusive, with the pressure to constantly innovate and stay relevant. Continuous adaptation can be both exhilarating and daunting, leading to self-criticism and stagnation. Imposter syndrome, in particular, tends to rear its head when we achieve success or step out of our comfort zones."
"However, it's crucial to remember that these challenges are not insurmountable barriers; they are opportunities for growth and self-discovery. By acknowledging our fears and vulnerabilities, we can cultivate resilience and develop the confidence to pursue our passions wholeheartedly. Surrounding ourselves with a supportive community of fellow creators and seeking mentorship can also help alleviate feelings of isolation and self-doubt."
