Onam 2023: Onam, the iconic harvest festival of Kerala, brings with it the grand feast known as 'Onam Sadhya'. A sumptuous vegetarian banquet served on banana leaves, 'Onam Sadhya' encapsulates history, culture, and community bonding. Here's all you need to know about the rich traditions of the grand feast.

Onam, also known as Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam, is a significant rice festival celebrated throughout Kerala. This year's celebrations began on August 20 and will end on August 31. The ten-day celebration honours the legendary King Mahabali, also known as Maveli, and includes special days such as Atham, Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradom, and Thiruvonam. Among these, Onam Sadhya is a culinary mainstay.

The Cultural Significance Of 'Onam Sadhya':

Onam Sadhya, a vibrant and delectable meal served on a banana leaf, extends far beyond a culinary experience. It carries the weight of mythology, community bonding, and the preservation of tradition.

At the heart of Onam festivities lies a lavish feast, also referred to as 'Onam Sadhya,' held on the tenth day of the harvest festival. This elaborate vegetarian banquet boasts around 26 dishes, each meticulously prepared and served on a banana leaf. The feast not only tantalizes taste buds but also unites communities in a collective culinary effort that begins well in advance.

Roots In Myth And History:

Onam Sadhya derives from Kerala's rich mythology and history. The feast is inextricably linked to the myth of King Mahabali, whose benevolent rule drew divine attention. Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, to put Mahabali's humility to the test. Vamana's request for three paces of land resulted in an incredible cosmic expansion. Onam commemorates Mahabali's annual return to his people, and the grand feast represents Kerala's reverence for its past and cultural unity.

Traditions And Rituals:

Onam's festivities are punctuated by diverse rituals, including Pookkalam (floral patterns), Onakalikal (festival games), Vallamkali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger and hunter tableau), and archery. Amidst these rituals, Onam Sadhya takes center stage, embodying humility and equality as it's served on banana leaves and consumed with hands.

Culinary Extravaganza Of Onam Sadhya:

With 26 different curries, fried vegetables, and sweets made from over 60 ingredients, Onam Sadhya is a harmonious orchestra of flavours. The spread incorporates sweet, salty, sour, and spicy flavours, as well as regional ingredients such as coconut, jaggery, yams, and lentils. Pappadam, Sharkara Varatti, Olan, Avial, Sambhar, Pulissery, Palada Pradhaman, and other names are included.
