With origins deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and tradition, Ganesh Chaturthi holds a special place in the hearts of millions as a joyous occasion that symbolizes the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Being the one who brings in wisdom and prosperity, this auspicious festival captures the essence of faith, culture, and unity, enriching the tapestry of India's spiritual heritage amid the sound of chants and the aroma of incense fill the air.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Date

Ganesh Chaturthi is set to commence on Tuesday, September 19 this year. This significant Hindu festival, known as Ganesh Chaturdashi, Vinayak Chaturdashi, or Ganesh Utsav, holds immense importance. The festivities honouring Lord Ganesha are observed with great enthusiasm across various states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. The 10-day long Ganesh Utsav festival will culminate with the Ganesha Visarjan on Thursday, September 28.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha's birth falls within the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month on the Hindu calendar, which typically corresponds to August-September on the Gregorian calendar. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Time

In accordance with the Hindu calendar, Vinayak Chaturdashi in 2023 will commence at 12:39 PM on Monday, September 18 and conclude at 8:43 PM on Tuesday, September 19th.

Notably, the Madhyahna Ganesha Puja Muhurat is scheduled from 11:01 AM to 01:28 PM, spanning a duration of 2 hours and 27 minutes.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Rituals

  • Devotees are advised to arise early, partake in a cleansing bath, and attire themselves in tidy and presentable garments.
  • Prepare a platform, drape it with cloth in shades of red or yellow, and place the idol upon it.
  • Gently sprinkle water from the Ganges, illuminate an oil lamp, and apply a tilak of turmeric and vermilion on the forehead.
  • Present offerings like Laddoos or Modaks, vibrant yellow flowers, and a sweet Betel leaf concoction.
  • Arrange a selection of Paan leaves, betel nut, cloves, and five types of dried fruits, as well as five assortments of fresh fruits.
  • Gracefully drape a fine dupatta over the head for added reverence.
  • Embellish the vicinity surrounding the idol with various ornamental items.
  • Initiate the Pooja ceremony by reciting the invocatory mantra 'Om Gan Ganpataye Namah.'
  • Follow this by narrating the Bindayak Katha, reciting the Ganesh Stotram, and participating in the recitation of the Ganesh Aarti.
  • Engaging in bhajan and kirtan sessions during these days is also recommended.
  • For those who cannot accommodate an idol of Lord Ganesha at home, expressing devotion can be achieved by visiting temples, presenting laddoos and blades of Durva grass to Lord Ganpati.
  • It is advised for people to avoid spotting the Moon a day prior to Ganesha Chaturthi, spanning from 09:45 AM to 08:44 PM, as per tradition.
