Kerala: IMD Issues Red Alert To Thiruvananthapuram, Educational Institutions To Be Shut Tomorrow

An orange alert has been sounded in Thrissur and Malappuram while a yellow alert was signalled in the remaining five districts

With torrential rains lashing Kerala, on Monday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert to seven districts on Monday while the weather forecasting department sounded a red warning to Thiruvananthapuram and five other districts -- Pathanamthitta, Kollam, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam -- on Tuesday. Besides, an orange alert has been sounded in Thrissur and Malappuram while a yellow alert was signalled in the remaining five districts.

District Collector of Thiruvananthapuram, Geromic George, declared a holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges for tomorrow, but he announced that the examinations will be conducted as per schedule.

Flash floods and landslides have been reported in parts of the state, especially in Kottayam a mudslide has been reported near Kanjiraplly, and several acres of crops were reported to be damaged. The mudslide entered into several homes and commercial spaces, reported The Hindu. Meanwhile, heavy rains caused traffic disruption in different parts, including the Erumeli-Mundakkayam road.

The Randattumunni bridge near Vakakkadu was submerged in flood water. As many as three persons were trapped on the bridge, who were later rescued by the Fire and Rescue personnel.

According to the IMD, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal from August 1-3 while extremely heavy rainfall in spells in Kerala & Mahe is likely from August 1-4.

Meanwhile, in two separate incidents on Sunday, one died as he got caught in a torrent at the Kumbhuvurutti waterfalls in Kollam while the other person was swept away in flood water. K Adwaith has been swept away while his friend Samuel was rescued by locals.

Amid heavy rainfall, a ban on night travel has been imposed in the hilly areas from 8 PM to 6 A, except for emergency services, according to an official statement. Besides the night travel ban, authorities issued directives to temporarily stop trekking, mining, fishing and boating activities.
