On August 24, Kerala HC stayed Kozhikode Sessions Court's order granting anticipatory bail to activist Civic Chandran. However, the Court directed to not arrest him until the court disposes of the appeal by the state govt seeking to cancel anticipatory bail to him, considering his age.
Earlier, Civic Chandran's bail plea created a controversy after a bizarre observation of the court. A Kerala Court said that sexual harassment will not "prima facie stand if the woman is wearing a sexually provocative dress”.
The Court also said, “Even admitting that there was physical contact, it is impossible to believe that a man, aged 74, and physically disabled can forcefully put the defacto complainant in his lap.”
Making the observations, granted bail to Civic Chandran in the sexual harassment case.
The complaint was given by a young writer who said that she was sexually assaulted by Chandran while attending a poetry camp in 2020 near Nandi beach in Kozhikode.
Meanwhile, Chandran had said that the woman raised a false complaint against him and that the survivor came with her boyfriend in the presence of many others.
