The 47-year-old MLA, a first-time legislator and son of the BJP veteran Yediyurappa, was appointed on November 10. Vijayendra, formerly the party's state unit's general secretary and vice-president, took over from Nalin Kumar Kateel. Kateel, a three-time Lok Sabha member from Dakshina Kannada, received a one-year extension after completing his initial three-year term as the BJP state president.
Earlier, Vijayendra said that he has been given the responsibility as a party worker, and not just because he is the son of Yediyurappa.
On the challenges before him, Vijayendra said strengthening the party organisation by taking everyone together and winning the maximum number of seats in the state in Lok Sabha polls were the major ones.

On his appointment, Vijayendra Yediyurappa said, "I would like to thank our national president JP Nadda, PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BL Santosh for having faith in me and giving me this opportunity to serve as the BJP president of Karnataka. I will take this opportunity to strengthen the party."
After the appointment, Vijayendra’s father Yediyurappa said that the BJP leaders would tour the state in order to win minimum 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in general elections 2024.
However, the Congress mocked the elevation and nepotism in the party.
