PSI Recruitment Scam: Karnataka Govt Orders Judicial Probe, Appoints Single-Member Commission

The probe is set to be conducted by retired Karnataka High Court judge B Veerappa.

The Karnataka government formed a one-man judicial commission to probe the police sub-inspector (PSI) recruitment scam. The probe is set to be conducted by retired Karnataka High Court judge B Veerappa and a deadline of three months has been set for the inquiry. The scam allegedly took place during the recruitment of 545 Police Sub Inspectors in the previous BJP government.

According to ANI, “Karnataka Government has ordered a judicial probe into the illegal direct recruitment of 545 PSIs (Police Sub Inspectors) that took place during the previous BJP government. A single-member commission headed by former Justice B Veerappa has been constituted and a report is to be submitted within three months.”

The probe was one of the major promises of Congress government during the run-up to the elections.

After the allegations, the then BJP government earlier ordered a probe by Criminal Investigation Department. During the probe, CID arrested several officials from Police Recruitment Cell including its then chief Additional Director-General of Police Amrit Paul. It also arrested several candidates who appeared for the exam.

Based on the findings, the government annulled the results and said that a re-exam will be conducted. However, the exams are yet to take place.

The judicial inquiry was ordered in the term of reference of four questions, they include were rules violated during the process of recruiting 545 PSIs? What were the violations or illegalities and at what level were they committed? Who are the persons that gained undue benefit from the illegalities? What measures can the government take to hold the PSI recruitment exam as per rules and in a transparent manner? and the order has also asked the CID and the police recruitment wing to cooperate with the commission by providing necessary documents and information, as per PTI.

On Karnataka govt appointing judicial commission, former Karnataka CM & BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai said, "I don't know what is the thinking of the government? PSI scam was ordered by CID. And already chargesheet has been filed. Once again they're going to judiciary commission. All the matter is also in the court. So it's for the legal experts to decide."
