Karnataka Hijab Row: Everyone Is Equal When It Comes To Uniform, Says Govt First Grade College Principal

"We have conveyed the same to the students and parents. They have agreed to oblige," Principal of MG Umashankar, Government First Grade College

New Delhi: Days a student moved the high court for being denied entry into classrooms for wearing hijab in a college in Karnataka's Udipi, Principal of MG Umashankar, Government First Grade College in Bhadravati of Shivamogga district on Thursday said that everyone is equal when it comes to uniform and there is no discrimination in it. "We have conveyed the same to the students and parents. They have agreed to oblige," the principal told ANI.

On Wednesday, some students of the Government First Grade College have protested wearing saffron stoles allegedly against certain students for wearing hijabs to classes, reports ANI.

In a similar incident, in government pre-university college on Wednesday, a few boys in Kundapur, also in Udipi, asked Muslim students to remove their hijabs, reports Indian Express. Reportedly, 27 girls were coming to college wearing hijabs.

Earlier, a writ petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court, in which it was mentioned that under Articles 14 and 25 of the constitution, the right to wear hijab is a fundamental right and is a key practice in Islam, reports The New Indian Express.

The controversy sparked in the month of December when several Muslim students were not allowed to enter the classes for wearing hijabs. They spent almost a month without attending the classes before the college was shut down after a few students tested positive for Covid-19.

The college however in a statement said that it took that steps to maintain 'uniformity', this news web portal reported earlier.
