Interfaith Couple Assault In K'taka: NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance, Asks Cops To Invoke IPC Provisions

On January 8, the crime took place when a group of men barged into a lodge room of an interfaith couple and thrashed them. The survivor later alleged that she was also raped by the accused.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo-motu cognisance of an alleged gang rape case in Haveri of Karnataka district. Further, the NCW sent a letter to DGP and said they would conduct an enquiry if they don't receive any reply to the letter with the next three days.

According to PTI, Rekha Sharma, chairperson, National Commission for Women, on the alleged gangrape case in #Haveri, Karnataka said, "We have taken sou-motu cognisance of the matter and sent a letter to the DGP (of Karnataka). Our team will visit and conduct an enquiry if we don't receive any reply of the letter."

Meanwhile, police said based on the statement of the victim, four persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident. "Based on the statement of the victim we have arrested four people in connection with the case. We will produce them before the court and demand 14 days of police custody. Soon we will arrest the rest of the accused," Anshu Kumar, SP Haveri, told news agency ANI.

On January 8, an incident involving a 26-year-old married woman from a minority community unfolded in Karnataka. She had entered a hotel around 1 pm accompanied by a 40-year-old Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver, with whom she had been in a relationship for the past three years, according to the police.

The assault took place within the confines of the hotel room, and the accused recorded the incident. Subsequently, the videos went viral on various social media platforms.

In a letter to the Karnataka DGP, the women's body, as per PTI, said, "You are, therefore, required to invoke the aforesaid provisions of the Indian Penal Code in the FIR along with other relevant provisions of the law and ensure that a fair and time-bound investigation is accomplished in the matter. All the accused men must be arrested at the earliest. The victim should be provided with free of cost medical treatment."
