Gangrape Incidents Happen All The Time, Says Karnataka Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar

The comment came shortly after Home Minister Araga Jnanendra blamed the victim for visiting a deserted place

Chennai: Even as the Congress leaders continue to blame the ruling BJP government for its inability to make arrests in Mysuru gang rape case, Karnataka Labour minister Shivaram Hebbar on Thursday said that gang rape incidents happened all the time.

The comment came shortly after Home Minister Araga Jnanendra blamed the victim for visiting a deserted place.

According to IANS report, Hebbar said that such gang rape incidents occured during other regime and they have been taking place for quite a long time. The report further quoted the minister saying that it is not that such incidents are taking place only when their power rules the state but women have been targeted earlier also.

Quoting him, the report said that it is common for the opposition to demand resignation but it is not correct. He further said that the state government will initiate action on the accused and they will be arrested soon, according to the report.

Earlier, the state home minister Jnanendra criticized the Congress for politicising the issue. Speaking to ANI, he said that the Congress is trying to gain political mileage from the incident. He said that the victim and her friend must have visited a deserted place but they should not have.

He further said, according to IANS, the opposition is unfairly demanding his resignation and the government's resignation which is unfair. The ministers’ statements have drawn sharp criticism both from the public and opposition parties.
