Maintain 1-Metre Distance, Wear Well-Fitting Mask: WHO Lists 'Most Effective Steps' To Fight Omicron Covid Strain
The World Health Organization, in an update, has recommended the 'most effective steps' individuals can take to reduce the spread of the Omicron Covid variant.
New Delhi: On November 26, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 a variant of concern, on the advice of WHO's Technical Advisory Group of Virus Evolution (TAG-VE).
Studies are being conducted on the variant, which was initially detected in South Africa, to better understand it. The WHO, in an update, has recommended the 'most effective steps' individuals can take to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant, with the scientific name B.1.1.529.
Most Effective Steps Individuals Can Take
The WHO has recommended people to maintain a physical distance of at least 1 metre from others to reduce the spread of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus. People must wear a well-fitting mask, and avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces, the UN health agency said in the update.
Individuals have also been advised to open windows to improve ventilation, and keep hands clean. The WHO also recommended people to cough or sneeze into a bent elbow or tissue, and get vaccinated when it is their turn.
It is important that inequities in access to Covid-19 vaccines are addressed to ensure that vulnerable groups, including health workers and older persons, receive their first and second doses, the WHO said in its update.
WHO said on its website it will keep providing updates as more information becomes available, including future meetings of the TAG-VE. The WHO will also make information available on its digital and social media platforms.
