Coronavirus LIVE: India is undergoing a massive surge in the number of Covid-19 cases since the dawn of the new year. New Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities have become the epicenters of Covid-19, but, apart from the cities, even J&K is facing ten times more Covid cases in the state.

Elections in five states are just around the corner. Curtailing the spread of Covid-19 is one of the major challenge that the administration faces amid the political rallies in various states.

The Election Commission of India on Saturday extended the ban imposed on physical rallies and roadshows till January 22, in view of rising cases of Covid-19.

However, the ECI has granted relaxation for the political parties to hold indoor meetings with a maximum of 300 persons or 50 percent of the capacity of the hall or the prescribed limit set by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

The active Covid cases rise to 93,407 in the national capital and the positivity rate remains at 30.64%.

Around 69,554 Covid patients are in home isolation, while 2,508 have been admitted in the hospitals with the infection, as per the health bulletin released by the Delhi government.

Maharashtra, one of the worst affected state recorded 42,462 new Coronavirus cases and 23 fresh fatalities. Meanwhile, the active caseload stands at 2,64,441.

The state also reported 125 new cases of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus, raising the overall count to 1,730.

India, on January 16 completed a year of administering Covid-19 vaccines to its citizens. India has registered 156 crore vaccine doses so far.
