Shark Tank India 4 is seeing a variety of investment decisions made by sharks that go beyond the immediate financial success of a pitch. Interestingly, shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal made an investment out of an emotional decision to help forward a cause. It all began with a young entrepreneur named Swati making a pitch about her saree brand Aseem by Aseem Shakti in the latest episode of Shark Tank India 4.
Swati's brand's USP is that their saree can be draped in 15 seconds, without any help and includes built-in pockets. Sharks such as Vineeta Singh and Namita Thapar were also impressed with the pitch and cheered for Swati's brand. However, what really impressed the sharks was Swati telling the backstory of her brand, and how it employs women from the lower income group and gives them employment with the means of her brand.
How did Swati's journey begin?
Swati asked for Rs 50 lakh in exchange of 2.5% equity, valuing her business at Rs 20 crore and added that she has already done business of over Rs 1 crore in half a year.
While Swati's business idea came quite randomly to her, she made it her mission to employ people from lower income groups in her company after she saw a group of women on the street with bandages on their backs. She later found out that all of them had marks of sustained injuries as they participated in human trials for cosmetic companies. “The greater the risk, the more money they would make,” Swati said, adding, “One woman had lost an ear.”
While all sharks were moved by Swati's story, they were surprised to know that Aseem was selling sarees between the ranges Rs. 3000 and Rs. 6000. Over the pricing issues, four sharks including Vineeta Singh backed out. While Swati's idea was impressive, she was unable to answer in-depth questions about her business' numbers, over which Peyush Bansal and Kunal Bahl also backed out.
When Anupam Mittal stepped in
It was then that Anupam Mittal stepped in and asked Swati, "How does it feel to have four sharks out?” he asked Swati, who replied, “It feels really bad.” Anupam jokingly remaked, “Don’t feel bad, because sabse bada sher baaki hai,” and added, “ It’s clear that you don’t have a great understanding of financials, and that you were parroting details here. But there’s room to grow and learn. What’s also clear is your vision. You want to help people, and you want to build a community. My business has a separate arm called Shaadi.org, whose purpose is to provide employment for women. I will deploy a marketing and finance person for you. You only need to focus on growing your community.”
Anupam offered Rs. 50 lakh in exchange for 10% equity, which she immediately accepted. After agreeing to the terms, Swati realised that she had forgotten to present the ‘sharks’ with some of her sarees. When she presented one to Anupam, he immediately draped it to Namita's surprise and pulled off a Pushpa move of his own kind.
