New Delhi: Rabindranath Tagore also called the Bard of Bengal, was an extraordinaire poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter. Rabindra Sangeet changed the course of Bengali music and Bangla films still either use Tagore’s work be it music, lyrics, or story or the films have the influence of his work all over them.
Art transcends boundaries and when it came to the Nobel laureate’s poetry and music, Bollywood too was not left untouched. Many Music directors like SD Burman, Rajesh Roshan, Pankaj Mullick were influenced by Tagore and a few of their work was inspired by Rabindra Sangeet.

1. Tere mere milan ki ye raina (Abhimaan)
Music Director: SD Burman
This melodious song from the 1973 film 'Abhimaan' starring Amitabh and Jaya Bacchan is composed by SD Burman, the one music director whose work was heavily influenced by Tagore’s music. The beautiful song is based on Tagore’s ‘Jodi taare nai chini go se ki‘. Burman used only the tune of the mukhda and not the stanzas. Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice has added beauty to the melodious music.
2. Chhukar mere man ko (Yaarana)
Music Director: Rajesh Roshan
Undoubtedly one of the most popular songs of all time, this track from the 1981 film 'Yaarana' is based on ‘Tomaar holo shuru aamar holo shaaraa‘. The first two lines are a direct lift from the Tagore’s song, the rest is Rajesh Roshan’s original music. The track, sung by Kishore Kumar, is a favourite across generations.
3. Nain deewane, ek nahi maane… (Afsar)
Music Director: SD Burman
The song is from the 1950 film 'Afsar' and the music composer is SD Burman. The tune of the song is inspired by Tagore’s ‘Shedin dujone dulechhinu bone‘, a very popular Bangla romantic number. Suraiya has sung the song.
4. Pawan chale zor…(Zalzala)
Music Director: Pankaj Mullick
This chorus song from the 1952 film 'Zalzala' was composed by Pankaj Mullick. The song was inspired by Tagore’s ‘Khoro bayu boy bege‘ from the Tasher Desh collection. Mullick was the first music director to use Tagore songs in films.
5. Man mera udta jaye badal ke sang…(Maa Beta)
Music Director: Hemant Kumar
The song in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is based on Tagore’s popular song ‘Monomor megher sangi‘. Hemant Kumar composed the song which is picturised on Nirupa Roy.
6. Koi jaise mere dil ka dar khatkaye…(Yugpurush)
Music Director: Rajesh Roshan
Music of this song from Nana Patekar, Manisha Koirala’s film 'Yugpurush' was given by Rajesh Roshan who was heavily inspired by ‘Tumi kemon kore gaan koro a guni‘ while composing the song. Asha Bhosle gave her voice to this rendition.
7. Bandhan khula, panchhi ura… (Yugpurush)

‘Bandhan khula‘ is a complete remake of Tagore’s ‘Paagla hawa badol dine‘. Preeti Uttam gave her voice to the song.
8. Piyu bole, piya bole (Parineeta)
Music Director: Shantanu Moitra
This popular song from Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan’s 'Parineeta' was composed by Shantanu Moitra who took inspiration from ‘Phoole phoole dhole dhole‘ - a song from Rabindranath Tagore’s Kaalmrigoya collection. Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal added beauty to the song by their soulful voice.
