'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Writer Reveals Why Tony Stark Wasn’t Part of The Script
Fans believe that the script was perfect to have Tony Stark’s cameo as he played such an important part in Peter’s life as his mentor. However, it seems that Marvel is done with Tony now.
New Delhi: Spider-Man’s latest outing with ‘No Way Home’ has created quite a stir as it is breaking box office records globally. However, many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans have been slightly disappointed because Iron Man does not appear in the film.
The narrative of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is based entirely on a rip in the multiverse which brings Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire back to life as Spider-Men. Fans believe that the script was perfect to have Tony Stark’s cameo as he played such an important part in Peter’s life as his mentor.
Chris McKenna, who is one of the writers of the film, was asked about this possibility on the Q&A segment of the Jeff Goldsmith podcast, according to media reports. Even after his death following the combat with Thanos, Tony still shadows the MCU. However, it seems that Marvel is done with Tony now.
“Honestly, that’s like a non-starter in the halls of Marvel, at least in our experience. They just don’t really like constantly invoking… I mean, Tony cast such a large shadow even after Endgame, which we dealt with in Far From Home. But I think everyone felt like we can’t just keep on going to the Tony well. And I think what we started realizing as we were writing this is that he wasn’t the Uncle Ben. I mean, he was a father figure. There was a bond between them. In Endgame he even has a photo of Peter and it seems to be the final moral impetus to have him risk everything to try to reset the balance of the universe,” McKenna said on the Q&A.
He added, “But I think in writing this we started realizing that we had an opportunity here to tell a different story for Peter Parker that by the end of this movie, maybe, is a different origin story than everyone else has assumed up to this point. And I don’t think having Tony there would have done anything. I think we start realizing that the moral impetus, the guide post of his life is May. And that for the first time he is tested about whether he can actually truly live up to this code that she’s instilled in him. That is what this Peter Parker story is all about.”
It was Tony Stark who brought Spider-Man to the MCU to help him in his battle against Captain America in Civil War (2016). Since then, he had been a father figure to the young Peter Parker.
Yet, nothing is certain as rumours did the rounds some time back that Robert Downey Jr. may return for his role as Tony in the ‘Iron Heart’ series. Another rumour currently doing the rounds is that Tom Cruise might be roped in to play the character of Tony Stark in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, slated for release this year.
