R Madhavan Says Aap Jaisa Koi Could Be His Last Romantic Role. Know Why

R Madhavan says Aap Jaisa Koi might be his final romantic film, calling it his “last chance” to portray age-appropriate love. The Netflix drama explores mature relationships and second chances.

R Madhavan, the beloved face of many on-screen love stories, returned to the romance genre with 'Aap Jaisa Koi', which premiered on Netflix over the weekend. The film, also starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, explores a tender and thoughtful portrayal of mature love - something rarely depicted in mainstream Indian cinema. While the film is earning praise for its understated storytelling and heartfelt performances, Madhavan has hinted this might be his swan song in the romance space.

Madhavan may not do romantic films anymore

In an interview with Just Too Filmy, Madhavan opened up about what drew him to the story and why he feels this could be his final romantic outing on screen. He explained that the film offered something he hadn’t seen much of - an “age-appropriate” love story.

"When I started this story, I thought I will be able to pull off a romantic story at the day and the age I was. Because I was looking for an age-appropriate romance. Maybe my last chance to do romance before I have to give it up completely. That’s why," he said.

Madhavan's romantic roles

Madhavan’s name has long been associated with memorable romantic roles, most famously as Maddy in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM), which remains a cult favourite more than two decades after its release. Originally a remake of the Tamil hit Minnale, the 2001 film cemented his status as a romantic hero in both Hindi and Tamil cinema.

Over the years, he has delivered several romantic hits including Alaipayuthey, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, and the Tanu Weds Manu series, showcasing his ability to bring warmth, charm, and emotional depth to characters navigating love and relationships.

About Aap Jaisa Koi

In 'Aap Jaisa Koi', Madhavan takes on the role of Shrenu Tripathi, a 42-year-old man trying to find meaning, connection, and second chances in life. Opposite him, Fatima Sana Shaikh plays Madhu Bose, and together, they explore the intricacies of love that blossoms later in life—quiet, steady, and deeply human.
