The rough tide for Kangana Ranaut's film seems finally to be over. The actress' historical biographical drama 'Emergency' saw a rise in footfall on its first weekend. After a sluggish start on Friday and a slow rise on Saturday, 'Emergency' seems to have picked up numbers at the box office on Sunday. Directed, co-produced and acted by Kangana herself, 'Emergency' crossed Rs. 10 cr mark in the domestic market, although it still has a long way to go.
Emergency opening weekend collection
On Sunday, Emergency's India nett collection was Rs. 4.35 cr, marking a 20.83% increase as compared to its Saturday figure, which was Rs. 3.6 cr. 'Emergency' also marks Kangana's solo directorial debut. The film opened to a nominal Rs. 2.5 cr on Friday, with a much better earning on Saturday and Sunday taking its total tally to Rs. 10.45 cr nett.
'Emergency' had an overall occupancy rate of 18.96% in the Hindi market on Sunday. Despite a dismal start with just 8.23% occupancy during the morning shows, the numbers saw a stark rise to 20.47 percent in the afternoon, peaking at 30.57% for evening shows before it dropped significantly to 16.58% during the night screenings.
Emergency's difficult release
However, 'Emergency' was filmed on a budget of Rs. 60 cr. If the numbers are true, then the film still has a long way to go, even so to cover its massive cost of production. Emergency's release has been riddled with its own set of challenges. The path to commercial success has been blocked by protests in Punjab and from some quarters of the country with the film managing to collect only Rs. 10 cr in its opening weekend.
Kangana Ranaut's previous films collections
Despite the dismal number, Kangana's 'Emergency' has definitely performed better than some of her recent outings including 'Thalaivii'( Rs. 1.85 cr), 'Dhaakad'( Rs. 98 lakh), and Tejas ( Rs. 1.2 cr).
