‘Durgamati’ Review: Bhumi Pednekar Disappoints As Protagonist, Makers Fail To ‘Think Big’

Bhumi Pednekar, who is a very good actress, somehow failed to connect with the audience in the scenes where she portrayed the character of ‘Durgamati’. Read on.

New Delhi: One of the most anticipated Bollywood movies of this year ‘Durgamati: The Myth’, released on December 11, 2020. This movie is the Hindi remake of the 2018 Telugu film ‘Bhaagamathie’ which starred Anushka Shetty in the lead role. Bhumi Pednekar, who played the role of the protagonist carried a film on her shoulder for the first time with ‘Durgamati’. ‘Durgamati’: Amazon Prime Video All Set To Give You Thrills With ‘Magic Mirror’ And ‘Durgamati Haveli’ ‘Durgamati: The Myth’ starts with a stealing case of 12 idols from different temples in a span of around 6 months. Arshad Warsi, the politician who is under suspicion is portrayed as a ‘god-like’ political figure, who always thinks about doing good for the common people. Arshad’s acting was convincing enough as Ishwar Prasad to make the audience pick up his side in the story. CBI officer Satakshi Ganguly portrayed by Mahie Gill is given the charge of the idol stealing case. While investigating the case, Satakshi is led to IAS Chanchal Chauhan portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar who is in jail for her fiancé’s (played by Karan Kapadia) murder. Chanchal once used to serve Ishwar as an assistant. Hoping that she would reveal some information about the politician, the CBI officer starts interrogating her in the haunted Durgamati haveli, out of everyone’s sight. As the plot moves forward with the CBI investigation, some unusual and eerie activities start happening with Chanchal inside the haveli. The activities start growing and Chanchal takes the form of the ghost ‘Durgamati’. On seeing her weird activities, she is then moved to a mental asylum where Ishwar Prasad comes to meet her. After a long conversation between the two and a number of flashbacks, it is then revealed that Ishwar was indeed a dirty politician and he was the one responsible for the stealing.
Directed by G. Ashok, this tale of dirty politics with secrets failed to spell the magic on screen. The plot seems to lose its way in the middle. Bhumi Pednekar, who is a very good actress, somehow failed to connect with the audience in the scenes where she portrayed the character of ‘Durgamati’. She could not bring out the perfect aura and the essence of a queen. Her performance as the IAS officer Chanchal Chauhan, however, was on point and she owned those scenes. The poor screenplay of the film could not do justice to the bunch of good artists. The movie has been produced by Bhushan Kumar, Akshay Kumar and Vikram Malhotra under T-Series, Cape of Good Films and Abundantia Entertainment. ‘Bhaagamathie’ Actress Anushka Shetty ‘Looking Forward’ To Watch Bhumi Pednekar Starrer ‘Durgamati’ Follow this space for more updates.
