About Tezaab
Directed by N. Chandra, 'Tezaab' starred Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles. The romantic action drama was a game-changer for Dixit, who became an overnight star after a string of 10 flops. In the movie, Kapoor portrayed Mahesh Deshmukh, also known as Munna, a former navy officer who becomes a gangster to avenge the death of his parents. The plot also follows his love story with Dixit’s character as he battles to save her from the same gang.
Released on November 11, 1988, 'Tezaab' was a box office sensation and the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It ran in theatres for over 50 weeks, achieving a golden jubilee status. This success was the third in a row for Chandra, following his hits 'Ankush' and 'Pratighaat'.
The film is particularly remembered for its chart-topping song "Ek Do Teen," which remains a beloved classic. 'Tezaab' was remade in Telugu as 'Two Town Rowdy' starring Daggubati Venkatesh, and in Tamil as 'Rojavai Killathe' with Arjun in the lead. The movie's story also influenced the 2004 Telugu film 'Varsham', featuring Prabhas. Notably, the core plot of 'Tezaab' was loosely inspired by the 1984 Hollywood film 'Streets of Fire.'
Looking ahead, Anil Kapoor is set to appear in 'Subedaar', marking his first collaboration with director Suresh Triveni. Meanwhile, Madhuri Dixit was recently seen as Manjulika in 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.'
