Oscars 2025: Indian audiences tuning into the 97th Academy Awards on Monday morning were caught off guard when host Conan O'Brien addressed them in Hindi during his opening monologue. The prestigious event, broadcast live in India via JioHotstar and Star Plus, saw the popular American comedian make an unexpected attempt to connect with viewers from the country. 

What Conan O'Brien said in Hindi

Hosting the Oscars for the first time, O'Brien took a moment to acknowledge the Indian audience, saying, "Bharat ke logon ko namaskar wahan subah ho chuki hai toh mujhe ummeed hai ki naashte ke saath Oscars dekhna" (Greetings to the people of India, it's morning there, so I hope you're watching breakfast with the Oscars).

Netizens react to Conan's Hindi

His Hindi-speaking effort quickly became a talking point on social media, with users on X (formerly Twitter) sharing mixed reactions. While many appreciated his attempt, others found his pronunciation amusing. 

"Conan O'Brien deserves an Oscar for the best foreign language attempt! Good job, though the Hindi was definitely ‘Hinding’! #Oscars2025," joked one user. 

Another wrote, "#ConanOBrien kicked off the #Oscar ceremony with a thoughtful shoutout to India. Spoke in Hindi to connect with viewers. #Oscars2025." 

However, not everyone was impressed. 

"Good attempt, but honestly, Conan totally butchered the Hindi greeting! #Oscars," commented a critic. 

One unimpressed viewer simply remarked, "...that was NOT Hindi." Another user wrote, "My ears are bleeding because of Conan's Hindi pronunciation."

"Did Conan say in Hindi? Couldn't understand a word," read another comment.

"I'll be processing Conan O Brien's Hindi for a long long time," wrote another user.

Conan also spoke in Spanish and Chinese.
