'Vicky Kaushal's Hands Went Numb': Director Shares What Really Happened on the Sets of Chhaava

In a recent interaction, the film's director Laxman Utekar spoke about how Vicky Kaushal gave his ‘life and soul’ to this role and spoke about a serious injury that stalled the shoot.

Vicky Kaushal's new avatar in 'Chhaava' has amped fans' anticipation about his upcoming period action film. In 'Chhava', Vicky plays the role of a Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who succeeded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, after his death. In a recent interaction, the film's director Laxman Utekar spoke about how Vicky Kaushal gave his ‘life and soul’ to this role.

How Vicky was injured during Chhaava shoot

He recalled an incident when Vicky was tied up the whole night to shoot a scene. While the actor did not seem to object to any of it. The process led to an injury, and a one-and-a-half-month break for recovery. In an interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Laxman also recalled an interesting coincidence that happened on the film's set. He said, "During the first day of shooting the torture scene, we realized that it was the same day when Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was actually tortured. Coincidentally, we were filming on that very day.”

Impact of Vicky’s injury

Laxman Utekar also spoke about Vicky's injury and the impact it had on production. He said, "The whole night, Vicky’s hands were tied up, and when we removed the ropes, his hands refused to come down—they were blocked. We had to take a one-and-a-half-month break, and the set had to be dismantled during that period. We gave him time to recover, rebuilt the set, and resumed shooting afterward.”

Besides Vicky, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna are also part of the film. Akshaye plays the role of Mughal Shahenshah Aurangzeb in the film. Earlier, Vicky had shared that he did not have too many scenes with Akshaye and did not get a chance to interact with him. However, when they finally met on set, they maintained a strict professional distance. Vicky had then shared, "When we were shooting that scene, we exchanged no good mornings or goodbyes or hellos. He was Aurangzeb and I was Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and we went straight into shooting the scene. There was no communication as Vicky Kaushal to Akshaye Khanna.”
