Sobhita Dhulipala Recalls Her Early Struggles When She Was Told She Wasn’t ‘Gori’ Or ‘Pretty’ Enough
The Night Manager 2 actress Sobhita Dhulipala said she encountered colourism and sexism during her auditions days.
New Delhi: Sobhita Dhulipala is a renowned actress who has been in critically acclaimed series like ‘Made in Heaven’ and ‘The Night Manager’. The actress's career has taken off, and she has no plans to slow down anytime soon. In 2016, with Anurag Kashyap's gripping thriller Raman Raghav 2.0, Sobhita Dhulipala made her move from modelling to acting. Recently, Sobhita gets candid about the challenges she faced throughout her early career. The actress encountered racism and sexism during her auditions.
Sobhita Dhulipala tried her hand at commercials before breaking into the film industry.
In a recent interview with Indian Express, Sobhita Dhulipala discussed the difficulties she encountered in the early stages of her career. Sobhita said that even after she won the title of Miss India Earth in 2013, she was still told that she wasn't "gori" (fair) or "pretty" enough to make it in the modelling world.
Sobhita said, “I remember…I was told many times that I’m not ‘gori’ (fair) enough…I was told to my face that I’m not pretty enough.”
She went on to say that, instead of worrying about what others would think of her appearance, she focused on how she might be more creative. “That’s when you start thinking out of the box, instead of waiting for a brilliant successful commercial filmmaker to ‘discover’ you. What is in my control is to go for auditions, give my 100 percent,” she said.
Sobhita received excellent reviews for her portrayal of Vaanathi in both Ponniyin Selvan films. She played Anil Kapoor's girlfriend in the first season of The Night Manager, and she'll be reprising that role in the sequel. ‘The Night Manager’ is the Hindi-language adaptation of John le Carre’s novel of the same name.
