During a 2018 visit to India, Williams shared an anecdote about how Tom Cruise’s legendary role as a fighter pilot in Top Gun ignited her passion for aviation.

"I wanted to fly jets because of Top Gun, but I ended up becoming a helicopter pilot instead," she revealed. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she attended test pilot school and met astronauts. "That’s when I realized I had some of the same qualifications. I thought, ‘Maybe this is the path I should take.’"

On physical adjustments, Williams said, "Your calluses disappear because you don’t walk. Your nails and hair grow faster. Wrinkles smooth out in zero gravity, and your spine expands, making you a little taller. But once you return, gravity brings you back to normal—sometimes with back pain."

At the ISS, Williams spoke about her mental-health and the challenges of being in an uncharted territory for so long. "I’ve been up here so long that I’m trying to remember what it’s like to walk. I haven’t sat, laid down, or walked in months. You just close your eyes and float," she had said.
