A Relationship That Didn’t Go the Distance

Karisma was once poised to become a Bachchan bahu. In 2002, she was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan, and the announcement was made with much fanfare. However, just months later, the engagement was called off. Reports at the time suggested that Karisma’s mother, Babita, was against the union and may have influenced her daughter’s decision. Allegedly, Babita demanded a prenuptial agreement that would ensure a share of Amitabh Bachchan’s wealth be transferred to Abhishek, which was reportedly not acceptable to the Bachchans. These claims, though widely circulated, remained unconfirmed.

A Marriage Marred by Controversy

In 2003, Karisma married Delhi-based industrialist Sunjay Kapur. What began as a fairy-tale union quickly turned into a media storm. The couple, who share two children, went through a very public and bitter divorce that was finalised in 2016. Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic abuse, while Sunjay alleged Karisma had only married him for financial gain.

Karisma’s father, veteran actor Randhir Kapoor, was vocal about his disapproval of the marriage. Speaking to Hindustan Times in 2016, he said, “Sunjay is a third-class man… Everyone knows our ­credentials. We are Kapoors. We don’t need to run after anyone’s money. We have been blessed with not only money, but our talent can support us for the rest of our lives… I never wanted Karisma marrying him… The entire Delhi knows how he is. I would not like to say anything more than this.”

Since her divorce, Karisma Kapoor has kept her romantic life completely private. She has not been linked to anyone publicly and has shown no inclination to remarry, at least not openly.

However, in 2022, the actress opened up ever so slightly during an AMA session on Instagram. When a fan asked whether she would ever consider marriage again, Karisma replied with a GIF of Quinta Brunson looking confused and the word, “Depends.” The cryptic but honest answer quickly made headlines and reignited public interest in her personal life.
