Bobby Deol Gets Emotional Reflecting On Career Struggles: ‘I Put My Family Through Hardship'

Bobby Deol won hearts with his portrayal of the menacing antagonist Abrar in Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, marking a return to mass popularity.

Bobby Deol has had a rollercoaster journey in the Hindi film industry. Once one of the most sought-after actors of the 1990s, his career hit a significant slump in the 2000s. However, his powerful comeback with the Netflix film Class of ’83 (2020) and the web series Aashram (2020) earned him critical acclaim and reestablished him as a serious performer.

Most recently, Bobby won hearts with his portrayal of the menacing antagonist Abrar in Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, marking a return to mass popularity.

Bobby Deol tears up discussing career's tough phase

At the recently held SCREEN Live event in Mumbai, Bobby became emotional as he reflected on how his career struggles had affected him and his family. With tears in his eyes, the Gupt actor shared the pain of those difficult times.

“I did put them through hardship, my family. We are so close-knit, we live together, and I know that they were going through pain by seeing me go through pain, and there is nothing they could have done,” Bobby said.

As his elder brother, Sunny Deol, consoled him, Bobby added, “That’s the whole thing. Don’t give up in life.”

Bobby Deol's work front

Bobby made his acting debut with Rajkumar Santoshi’s Barsaat in 1995 and quickly rose to stardom with hits like Gupt (1997), Soldier (1998), Badal (2000), Bichhoo (2000), Ajnabee (2001), and Humraaz (2002). However, the 2000s brought a series of box-office failures. Despite an attempted comeback with Race 3 (2018)—which, while commercially successful, received criticism—his career struggled until the success of Class of ’83 and Aashram.

Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, became a turning point for Bobby, with both audiences and critics praising his chilling portrayal of Abrar, a mute antagonist. The film achieved massive box-office success, and Bobby’s performance was hailed as one of his finest.

Looking ahead, Bobby Deol has an exciting slate of projects. He will appear in two Telugu films, Daaku Maharaaj and Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1. Additionally, he will star in the much-anticipated multi-starrer Housefull 5, Alpha, and the Tamil film Thalapathy 69.
