Veteran actor Anupam Kher is widely regarded as one of the most versatile performers in Indian cinema. His expansive body of work spans both Bollywood and Hollywood, including a role in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy 'Silver Linings Playbook' (2012), where he shared screen space with legends like Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, and Bradley Cooper.
In a recent episode of the Qisse with Kopal podcast, Anupam’s son, actor Sikandar Kher, recalled an inspiring story that highlighted his father’s confidence and resolve during the shooting of Silver Linings Playbook.

Sikandar shared, “Robert De Niro is my father’s favourite actor. And he got a chance to work with him on Silver Linings Playbook. During a rehearsal, there was a situation—De Niro felt that my father’s character shouldn’t be in the scene. He believed that his character wouldn’t let my dad’s character enter the house because he didn’t like him.”
Despite being a guest on an American set, Anupam Kher stood up for himself. “He thought, let me just give them a piece of my mind. And he went up to the director, in front of the whole set—Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Chris Tucker, Robert De Niro—and explained why he should be in the scene,” Sikandar recalled.
“The director looked at De Niro and asked, ‘Bob?’ And De Niro said, ‘Okay.’ My father was a nobody there, coming from India. He could have lost the role right then and there. But he stood his ground and held on to his self-respect. That’s something I want to learn from him,” he added.
