A video from the occasion captured a moving moment as the two old friends greeted each other warmly, stirring nostalgia among fans of Hindi cinema’s golden era.
The funeral, held at Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu, saw several industry stalwarts come together to pay tribute to Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87 due to age-related complications. The actor-filmmaker was cremated with full state honours, including a three-gun salute, befitting his contribution to Indian cinema and his legacy as ‘Bharat Kumar.’

As Amitabh Bachchan made his way through the crowd, he spotted Salim Khan and immediately approached him. A smile lit up Salim’s face as the two shook hands, exchanged a few words, and embraced. In the video, Amitabh is seen gently holding Salim’s hand and walking alongside him before they pause for a heartfelt hug. Abhishek Bachchan, who accompanied his father, also greeted Salim Khan with a warm embrace. Both Amitabh and Abhishek were dressed in white kurta-pyjamas paired with black jackets, a customary choice for the occasion.

Salim Khan, one half of the iconic writer duo Salim-Javed, shared a significant professional relationship with Amitabh Bachchan during the 1970s and ’80s. Salim and Javed Akhtar penned several landmark films that catapulted Amitabh to superstardom, including Sholay (1975), Don, Trishul (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979), Dostana, and Shaan (1980).

Celebs pay last respect to Manoj Kumar
Saturday’s farewell brought together many from the film fraternity. Among those in attendance were Arbaaz Khan, Subhash Ghai, Anu Malik, Zayed Khan, Prem Chopra, and Rajpal Yadav. His body, draped in the national flag and adorned with tri-coloured flowers, was taken in a decorated ambulance from his home to the crematorium around 10:30 am. His sons Vishal and Kunal performed the last rites.

Born Harikrishan Goswami in Abbottabad—then part of undivided India—his family moved to Delhi after Partition in 1947. He later graduated from Hindu College, Delhi University, before heading to Mumbai to chase his dreams in the film industry.
Over the decades, he delivered several memorable performances in films such as Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Hariyali Aur Raasta, and the multi-starrer epic Kranti, which he also directed.
Manoj Kumar is survived by his wife Shashi and their two sons.
