Uttarakhand Elections 2022: Expelled BJP Leader Harak Singh Rawat Joins Congress, Meets Harish Rawat

This came after he met former Uttarakhand chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat.

New Delhi: With barely a month left for voting in the hill state of Uttarakhand, expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harak Singh Rawat on Friday joined the Congress.

This came after he met former Uttarakhand chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat.

Earlier on Wednesday, Harish Rawat had said that the Congress high command would take a final call on whether Harak Singh Rawat will be inducted into the party.

“I am not angry with anyone. The Congress' high command has to decide whether Harak Singh Rawat will be inducted into the party or not,” the Congress leader said, ANI reported.

“I will accept whatever decision the Congress party takes. I am not in the capacity to decide whether Harak Singh Rawat should be inducted into the party or not,” he added.

The former chief minister’s remarks came as Harak Singh Rawat had earlier said that he is ready to apologise to Harish Rawat any number of times for the sake of Uttarakhand's interests.

“He (Harish Rawat) is my elder brother. I can apologise to him a hundred times or even one lakh times for the development of Uttarakhand, the youths of the state and its interests. I have no ego,” he said, PTI reported.

Harak Singh Rawat had left the Congress earlier in 2016 along with nine other MLAs and joined the BJP.

The Congress is yet to announce its first list of candidates for the Uttarakhand Assembly elections despite the screening committee holding discussions for around a week.

The hill state will go for polls in a single phase on February 14 with the last date for nomination of candidates fixed for January 28.

The results will be declared on March 10.
