Tripura Polls: Miscreants Stopping People From Voting At Some Places, Alleges Former CM Manik Sarkar

Manik Sarkar alleged that miscreants on behalf of BJP are causing trouble and stopping people from casting their votes fearlessly at some places. 

New Delhi: Amid the polling at 60 Assembly constituencies in Tripura on Thursday, CPIM leader and former CM of Tripura Manik Sarkar alleged that miscreants on behalf of BJP are causing trouble and stopping people from casting their votes fearlessly at some places. 

“In some places, miscreants on behalf of BJP are causing trouble and stopping people from casting their votes fearlessly. But the people are trying their best to cast votes”, Manik Sarkar told the news agency ANI.

He further said that at some places where voters are not allowed to vote, they are blocking roads. “At some places where voters are not allowed to vote, they are blocking roads and urging the election commission, if they are not allowed to cast votes they won’t let others cast their votes. This is a positive sign and a determined effort,” Sarkar said.

The former CM also said the Chief Electoral Officer is responding in a positive manner to the information that is being communicated to him. “The information our people get is communicated to Chief Electoral Officer. He is responding in a very positive manner. But what action is taken onground needs to be examined further,” Sarkar said.

32.06 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 11 am in Tripura where pollling is underway for the 60-member Legislative Assembly, as per Election Commission of India. A total of 259 candidates are in fray with 58 Independent aspirants. The Bharatiya Janata Party is contesting on 55 seats while its ally Indigeneous People's Front of Tripura has fielded candidates in six seats. The two parties will be having a friendly fight on one seat. 

The polling began at 7 am amid tight security said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao on Thursday, reported news agency PTI. 28.13 lakh voters are scheduled to exercise their franchise during the day in 3,337 polling stations across the northeastern state to determine the fate of 259 candidates, he said.
