Stung By Rebellions In 2022 And 2023, Uddhav Sena & Sharad Pawar's NCP Take Measures To Prevent Re-Run
To prevent past rebellions from recurring, Shiv Sena (Uddhav) and NCP have mandated candidates to sign affidavits stating their loyalty to the respective parties.
Hit by major rebellions in the last two years, which eventually led to the parties' split, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction and NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) have now taken measures to prevent a re-run. Over the last 2 days, the parties made their candidates contesting the elections sign affidavits apart from the current MLAs.
The affidavit states: "After getting elected, we shall remain with the party."
According to sources, keeping in mind the split that happened earlier in the party, both parties are taking preventive measures so that there is no conflict in the future.
In 2022, Uddhav Thackeray was stunned by a rebellion orchestrated by Eknath shinde, which split the Shiv Sena into two, and joined hands with the BJP to become the CM. Similarly, Sharad Pawar was stung by a rebellion led by his nephew Ajit Pawar in 2023. Ajit Pawar joined the Shinde Sena-BJP alliance and became the Deputy CM of Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections for all 288 seats were held in a single phase on November 20. Both Mahayuti and the Mahavikas Aghadi launched fierce campaigns against one another.
This was one of the most crucial elections in the history of Maharashtra's assembly as it follows two years of political turmoil. Two of the biggest parties in the state, the Shiv Sena and the NCP, split after surprising rebellions by the leaders closest to the chiefs of the respective parties. Both Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar were shell-shocked after their aides Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar orchestrated rebellions to secure the CM and Deputy CM's seats, respectively. While the Shiv Sena split in 2022, the NCP split in 2023.
In this election, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance sought to maintain its hold on power, while the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), aimed to build on its recent successes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.
