Rajya Sabha Election: 41 Candidates Elected Unopposed. Polling In Himachal, UP, Karnataka On Feb 27

A total of 41 candidates, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and BJP's Ashok Chavan were elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha with polling set to be held in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP chief J P Nadda, and new party entrant Ashok Chavan, along with Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan, were among the 41 candidates elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. These results came as Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh prepare for polling on February 27. According to the latest figures, the BJP emerged victorious in the highest number of seats, securing 20, followed by Congress with 6 seats, Trinamool Congress with 4, and other parties with varying numbers.

Rajya Sabha Election: Polling Scheduled for Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh

The biennial elections initially announced for February 27 covered 56 seats, with 41 candidates already declared winners due to the absence of opposition. The remaining 15 seats will witness polling on the designated date. Uttar Pradesh will see 11 candidates competing for 10 seats, while Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh will have polling for 4 and 1 seat respectively.

JP Nadda, along with other BJP nominees Jasvantsinh Parmar, Mayank Nayak, and diamond baron Govindbhai Dholakia, emerged victorious from Gujarat. The Congress and other opposition parties refrained from fielding candidates against the BJP in Gujarat, where the latter holds a significant majority in the assembly.

Sonia Gandhi secured her seat unopposed from Rajasthan, alongside BJP's Chunnilal Garasiya and Madan Rathore. In Maharashtra, all six candidates, including BJP's Ashok Chavan and Shiv Sena's Milind Deora, were elected unopposed.

In Bihar, candidates from various parties were declared winners, including JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Jha, BJP's Dharmshila Gupta and Bhim Singh, and RJD's Manoj Kumar Jha and Sanjay Yadav.

Rajya Sabha Election: State-Wise Polling And Candidates

In Uttar Pradesh, where 10 seats are up for grabs, the BJP has fielded eight candidates, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has renominated Jaya Bachchan.

In Karnataka, five candidates are contesting for four seats, with Congress and BJP fielding their candidates alongside JD(S) leader D Kupendra Reddy.

In Himachal Pradesh, a contest has been forced by the BJP, pitting Harsh Mahajan against Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi for a single seat.

BJP And Congress's Strength In Rajya Sabha

Prior to Tuesday's results, the BJP held 93 seats in the Upper House, while the Congress had 30 seats, making it the second-largest party in the Rajya Sabha. Many outgoing MPs, including Union ministers, have been renominated by the BJP, signaling potential candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
