In a significant move, leaders representing 26 opposition parties convened in Bengaluru today to devise a comprehensive strategy to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at the press conference, after the meeting, announced that the new alliance forged will be called I-N-D-I-A which stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance. After the meeting, the leaders expressed grave concern over the relentless onslaught on the fundamental principles enshrined in India's Constitution by the BJP.

The joint opposition in its resolution emphasized the pressing need to address various critical issues currently facing the nation. As per the resolution of the opposition, a paramount objective of their united front is to combat the assault on the Constitution and the constitutional rights of democratically elected state governments.

The opposition parties collectively aim to counter the escalating hatred and violence against minority communities, put an end to the rising incidence of crimes against women, Dalits, and Adivasis, and demand equitable treatment for socially, educationally, and economically marginalized groups.

Key Points: Resolutions From 26-Party Meet In Bengaluru

  • The leaders expressed concern over the humanitarian tragedy that has destroyed Manipur. They criticized Prime Minister's silence and called it shocking and unprecedented. They said they are determined to combat and confront the continuing assault on the Constitution and on constitutional rights of democratically elected state governments.
  • The leaders reinforced their determination to confront the severe economic crisis characterized by the incessant surge in prices of essential commodities and unprecedented levels of unemployment. They strongly opposed the demonetization policy, citing the extensive suffering it inflicted upon the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the unorganized sectors, which resulted in widespread youth unemployment. The leaders also voiced their objection to the indiscriminate selling of the nation's assets to favoured associates. They emphasized the imperative of building a fair economy that supports a robust and strategic public sector, as well as a competitive and thriving private sector, fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurial growth.
  • The progressive parties expressed their resolute determination to counter and confront the ongoing assault on the Constitution and the constitutional rights of democratically elected state governments. They condemned the deliberate attempts to weaken the federal structure of the Indian polity. The leaders criticized the excessive interference of Governors and Lieutenant Governors in states not ruled by the BJP, which they argued violated constitutional norms. They also raised concerns about the brazen misuse of government agencies by the BJP administration to target political rivals, an act they deemed detrimental to India's democratic principles. The leaders highlighted the active denial of legitimate needs, requirements, and entitlements to states not aligned with the BJP.
  • The alliance aims to collectively combat the manufactured hatred and violence targeting minority communities, halt the escalating crimes against women, Dalits, and Adivasis, demand equitable treatment for socially, educationally, and economically disadvantaged groups, and, as an initial step, prioritize the implementation of a Caste Census.
  • The leaders pledged to fight against the BJP's systematic conspiracy to target, persecute, and suppress fellow Indians. They condemned the ruling party's divisive ideology and poisonous campaign of hate, which has led to vicious violence against those opposing their agenda. These attacks not only violate constitutional rights and freedoms but also undermine the core values upon which the Republic of India was founded, including liberty, equality, fraternity, and political, economic, and social justice. The leaders also criticized the BJP's repeated attempts to distort and rewrite Indian history, viewing it as a direct affront to social harmony.
