In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Congress in Telangana secured a significant victory, clinching the majority of reserved constituencies in the state. Out of the five reserved constituencies, including three for Scheduled Castes (SC) and two for Scheduled Tribes (ST), Congress emerged victorious in three SC seats and one ST seat, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured one ST reserved constituency.
The winning constituencies for Congress include Peddapalle (SC), Nagarkurnool (SC), Warangal (SC), and Mahabubabad (ST), while BJP retained the Adilabad (ST) seat.
The successful candidates are G Vamsi Krishna (Peddapalle), Mallu Ravi (Nagarkurnool), Kadiam Kavya (Warangal), Balram Naik Porika (Mahabubabad), and Godam Nagesh (Adilabad), according to a report on PTI. Kavya is the daughter of Station Ghanpur MLA Kadiyam Srihari and Vamsi Krishna is the son of Chennur MLA Gaddam Vivekanand.
Godam Nagesh, a BJP candidate, clinched the seat, leveraging his extensive political background as an MLA, Minister, and MP. The considerable influence of Sangh Parivar groups is said to have contributed significantly to rallying support from tribal communities and Backward Castes (BCs), resulting in the BJP's consecutive victory in Adilabad.
Notably, in the 2019 elections, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had secured victories in Peddapalle, Nagarkurnool, Warangal, and Mahabubabad, while BJP had won Adilabad.
The TRS, led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, faced a major setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as it failed to secure any seats. This defeat adds to the party's woes following its surprising loss in last year's assembly elections.
The decline in the popularity of TRS since the assembly polls seems evident, with voters turning towards the ruling Congress. Factors such as disenchantment against TRS after its decade-long rule and the Congress party's perceived pro-poor image likely contributed to the grand old party's success in the state.
