Former UN diplomat and three-time MP Shashi Tharoor is vying for re-election from Thiruvananthapuram. Renowned for his robust educational background and international experience, Tharoor clinched a hat-trick victory in 2019 with a staggering 416,131 votes. This time around, he is up against a formidable opponent in BJP's Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a minister in the outgoing Narendra Modi government.
The electoral face-off holds significance as it marks a notable battle between two members of the Nair community, the second-largest Hindu group in Kerala.
Thiruvananthapuram, once a Communist Party stronghold, has been a Congress bastion since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. With a total electorate of 14,03,281, including 7,27,469 women, 6,75,771 men, and 41 transgenders, the city holds significant political sway in Kerala.
As the most populous city in the state, Thiruvananthapuram has witnessed a dynamic political landscape over the years, with representation from various parties. Traditionally, the political contest in Kerala has primarily been between the INC and the CPI(M).
