The Lok Sabha Elections will be held in seven phases starting from April 19 and going on till June 1. The votes will be counted on June 4. The current term of the Lok Sabha ends on June 16, necessitating the formation of a new House before then. In 2019, the Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases between April and May. The results were announced on May 23, 2019.
Senior BJP leader Amit Shah held a roadshow in Tamil Nadu's Madurai on Friday in support of the party's Madurai Lok Sabha candidate Raama Srinivasan and other NDA candidates for the April 19 election.
Scores of enthusiastic cadres who lined up on either side of the road from the Periyar bus stand to Vilakkuthoon junction raised slogans. Shah greeted the cadres from his specially-designed vehicle and flashed the party's Lotus symbol throughout the nearly 2.5 km stretch, close to the renowned Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple.
Later addressing party functionaries, Shah said Tamil Nadu had not witnessed development because of the "corrupt DMK and AIADMK", though the state had potential. The BJP alone has concern for the state's development and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made the nation secure and prosperous, he claimed.
"The BJP is contesting this general election without being in alliance with either the DMK or AIADMK... Now the time has come for the people of Tamil Nadu to stand with Narendra Modi and make him Prime Minister for a third consecutive term," Shah said.
Apologising for his inability to speak in Tamil, Shah said that Modi had taken Tamil pride to the world and only the BJP could take the Tamil language and its culture to other parts of the country. "I will try to speak in Tamil in two-to-five years," he said. Later, posting a video of his roadshow, Shah said there was overwhelming support for Modi 3.0 at the Madurai roadshow.
