Lok Sabha Elections 2024: DMK Finalises Seat-Sharing With Left Parties, CPI (M) To Contest From Madurai & Dindigul

Previously, CPI(M) was given Coimbatore constituency in Lok Sabha polls 2019 but the party has now been assigned Dindigul for the upcoming electoral contest.

In a significant development in Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) concluded its seat-sharing discussions with its alliance partners, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), on Tuesday. Repeating the same strategy from 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, DMK has allocated two seats to each of the Left parties for the upcoming elections.

Following the agreement, the CPI(M) has declared its intention to field candidates in the Madurai and Dindigul districts. The CPI has announced it will contest the elections from Tirupur and Nagapattinam constituencies.

Notably, there has been a change in allocation for the CPI(M) compared to the last general election. Previously, CPI(M) was given Coimbatore constituency but the party has now been assigned Dindigul for this electoral contest.

Speculation is rife that MP Su Venkatesan will once again represent the CPI(M) in the Madurai constituency. Venkatesan, a renowned Tamil writer and a member of the CPI(M)'s state committee, had secured a victory in Madurai during the 2019 general elections. He triumphed over his opponent VVR Raj Satyen with a commendable vote share of 44.20%. Venkatesan, also celebrated for his Sahitya Academy Award-winning Tamil novel 'Kaval Kottam', has continuously raised the demand to complete AIIMS, Madurai project throughout his tenure as MP.

The DMK earlier sealed the alliance with Congress and Thol Thirumavalavan-led Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).
